What we're doing
We're updating and modernizing our Zoning Bylaw to fit our growing and evolving community. The updates will also better align with what our current and future residents and businesses prioritize, like:
- Affordable housing
- Economic Development
- Sustainability
What is a Zoning Bylaw?
A Zoning Bylaw is a city’s most important planning tool. It helps implement the City’s land use vision created in the Official Community Plan (OCP) by regulating how land, buildings and other structures may be used. In a Zoning Bylaw, each property is given a “zone” which describes what can be done on the property. A zone typically contains rules related to building design, density, setbacks, heights, and specific uses.
How the updated Zoning Bylaw will better fit the community's needs:
- Provide more efficient and flexible options for homeowners and businesses
- Increase the supply and types of homes available
- Expand opportunities for childcare
- Update parking requirements to support electric vehicles, car share, and cycling
- Support below-market rental housing
- Increase understanding by simplifying the total number of zones to less than 20
